Turkey's President, Recep Tayip Erdogan, reacted angrily to a group of about 300 French personalities, who called on Muslims to denounce anti-Hebrew and anti-Christian references to the Qur'an.
Addressing a meeting of his party on Tuesday, Erdogan described the group, including actor Gerard Depardieu, singer Charles Aznavour and former president Nicolas Sarcozy, as the disgusting “” and said he is attacking the holy “s for Muslims”.
The group signed a manifest that was published in the newspaper Le Parisien last month.
The statement calls on Muslims to denounce certain references so that no believer can refer to the holy book to commit a crime”.
Erdogan said other holy books have controversial references.
“If they had read it, they might have demanded that the Bible be banned, but they have no such concerns”, Erdogan said.
