The world's oldest scientist has arrived in Switzerland in good mood, just days before he ends his life in an assisted suicide clinic.
Britain's British-born publisher and ecologist David Goodall landed at Basel after flying from Bordeaux, France, where he said goodbye to his family.
A journalist asked him if he plans to proceed with the plan for his suicide Thursday. Goodall enthusiastically replied: "Oh yes, that's why I'm here!
Speaking from his cart he went on, “I am glad that I have arrived and will be even more satisfied when the further steps of my journey end. For example: When I get to the hotel and when I meet my doctor”.
He added, “When someone exceeds the age of 50 or 60, he should be free to decide for himself whether he wants to live”.
Sober and funny, Goodall still expresses his frustration that he is no longer so cheap or mobile in the last years of his life as he once was.
Although he does not suffer from a terminal illness, he said that he hoped that his journey to the end of his life in Switzerland, where assisted suicide is allowed, would change the minds of lawmakers in Australia.
I think we have a long enough way to go. I would like to see the system change, but I doubt it will happen within the next ten years “, he said.
