Blind, but not minding my work as a carpenter, David's extraordinary story

Blind, but not minding my work as a carpenter, David's extraordinary story

Each job has its own challenges, but for Daut Hoxha, 42-year-old from the town of Ferizaj, the carpenter's skill is very special. Work in the carpenter's work, which because of sharp labor tools carries risks for all who use them, is even more specific to Hoxha for his being [...]

In the carpenter's workshop, which is his family's property and is located near his home, Hoxha spends much of the day working wooden furniture but other materials that his clients ask for. He is already instructed and moving in a very easy and good way, knowing exactly where and how the timber materials are located but also all the tools and vehicles that he needs separately, depending on what he is working on.

I have a routine and we do this, as a family, from the '70s. But my brothers and I started after the war. We're about 18 years here, and we're developing this wood processing activity. We continue to work massive wooden doors, but we also do other things that command them. We only work here on orders. We don't work for the market, but we only run orders, for example, friends after friends, whatever it takes to give it to”, Daut Hoxha told Radio Free Europe.

He, the chairman of the Association of Blind Persons in Ferizaj, tries to work for the good of the community, as IT trainers and for “Braine”This writing system and reliv reading for blind people. Also, he's an abstract student of justice at AABA. As Hoxha says, his typical day is very busy in activities, but in the afternoon he is involved in workshop work.

But how dangerous does Hoxha find work in the carpenter, especially for a blind person, such as him?

“As dangerous as it is, but I do it with special care and if it becomes something carefully, then it is not a problem for anyone. I'm used to it and I don't have any big trouble with cars and other tools because I do it very carefully. I know what size the saw is. The distance of the bill sawer, escapes danger, and works smoothly. Being passive is very bad because you take different habits. I'm active, I'm working, and it's not some kind of job that's very difficult. I work willingly and gladly”, Hoxha said.

However, he considers himself lucky to have the chance to work and show his work. As he says, huge numbers of blind people demand that alone given opportunity to show that they are able to work at various jobs and to live by their work, not becoming a burden to society. The development of technology, he says, has also helped blind people to develop in various fields.

You just have to have a commitment, no matter how small, and have the will. For now, they're not bad. It's the fables and everything. But some are thinking that the blind cannot work. They have the opportunity to do all the work, but they just have to give them opportunity and opportunities. It is bad luck that Kosovo's disabled persons are treated differently. They are not treated equal as all Kosovo citizens”, Hoxha said.

During the days when Hoxha finds some leisure time, he is devoted to another passion. The doves are, he says, an early love for it. In a corner of the courtyard where he lives, he has sheltered over 100 pigeons of different races he cares for.

And people would come to you and say, "Do the pigeons come into your hands?" We blind, our sense of touch are highly developed. I've had a chance since 100 of them, anybody I catch, I knew by name who it is. I got chickens, I got dogs. I love animals and birds. I'm worried about”, Hoxha said.

However, as Hoxha said, the opportunity to move through the city, freely and without escort, for and for all other blind persons, remains impossible because of the lack of adequate infrastructure for these people.
