By 2022, Kosovo will have completed its modern railway network connecting it with the countries of the region and beyond.
That is how Kosovo government officials announce, according to which, in July, Kosovo's Fushe Han of Elez bordering Macedonia will begin rehabilitation of Kosovo's Fushe Leshak railways at the border with Serbia.
The co-ordinator for the Western Balkans in the Government of Kosovo, Gazmend Abrashi, has told Radio Free Europe that financial means are provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for this project, (BERZH), while a smaller amount will be divided by the Government of Kosovo.
The railway sector will be rebuilt because we already have agreements with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and other relevant institutions that we will invest over 209m euros in reconstruction of the Serbian railway network” has said Abrashi.
Government officials than Kosovo have earlier expressed interest in building Kosovo railway lines.
Regional projects were also discussed at the Western Balkan Summit, which was held last year in Italy, under which leaders of Western Balkan countries and European Union have signed the Transport Community Treaty for the countries of this region.
In contrast, the agreement on the project for rehabilitation of the railway line -- "1010," between Kosovo and the EBRD has been signed earlier this year.
Kosovo's railway project '%s' is part of the main railway network of the Western Balkans. An expansion of the Trans-European Transport Networks, which is part of the European Union's broader efforts to promote transport linkage in the Western Balkans.
Otherwise, the railway infrastructure in Kosovo continues to face a poor situation.
Binaris, plant buildings, flares, then railway operations, locomotives, passenger cars are outdated. Because of technical conditions on the current lines, the speed of trains can develop only 50 miles [50 km] per hour.
Because of this situation, experts in the field consider that regional integration through railway corridors is very important because it will facilitate the circulation of people and goods.
Sadullah Avdiu, the professor of course “Railways Projection”, at the Faculty of Construction and Architecture, has said integration of the railway network is necessary, as Kosovo's railway network should not be isolated from European countries and beyond.
According to him, railway transport, whether of travelers or goods, is apparently cheaper and safer than road transport, and modernisation of infrastructure and transport vehicles is needed.
This project is expensive but necessary. New locomotives and new cars” are needed to modernise the infrastructure, and Avdiu told Radio Free Europe .
The government of Kosovo will engage private operators, says Gazmend Abrashi.
“There is the possibility that another operator will be owner of trains, cars and locomotives and that he will pay a certain percentage of the infrastructure owner in this case “Infrascopes” says Abrashi
In this case, allow private operators to participate in this project”
In Kosovo two companies operate in the operation and management of railway infrastructure. <x) Infracos” is taken with railway infrastructure.
Currently, in Kosovo regular lines for internal transport through trains, there are in the Pristina delegation, Peja, Hani of Elezi Fushe Kosovo and vice versa.
While, for international transport, Kosovo railways have a regular train called the fast train, which circulates once a day at the Pristina festival Skopje é Pristina.
