Prosecutors in Texas have filed charges of alleged murder against teenager Dimitrios Pagourtzis for the massacre yesterday in a high school. Although 17-year-old, it will be treated in the judicial system as an adult defendant, which leaves open the possibility of being sentenced to death.
Ten people lost their lives and more than ten were injured in the latest deadly attack on an American school. Authorities say besides suspects Dimitrios Pagourzis, another individual's interest has been banned. The massacre at Santa Fe School has reawakened the debate on gun violence in the United States.
Last Friday began as a typical day in a high school, but Santa Fe School in southeast Texas was quickly turned into a macabre crime.
I heard four or five shots fired. I don't know. As soon as I realized what it was, I started running” says student Paige Curry.
Authorities say the suspect, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, opened fire at Santa Fe High School shortly before 8am Friday morning. Some people lost their lives, most of them teenage students.
United States President Donald Trump, speaking at the White House, expressed regret over the recent attack on a school.
This is happening very often in our country for many years, for many decades. We mourn for the loss of our lives and give our support to all affected by this absolutely horrible attack”.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said there were not many signs that the suspect intended to perform such an act, unlike the author of crime at the Stoneman Douglas School. He added that the weapons used were legally owned by the suspect's father.
In this case, there were no signs, or very few signs that he would do such a thing. On his Facebook page he had a picture of a shirt written “born to kill, but nothing else. He had no criminal history or problems with police”.
Murder at Santa Fe High School occurred just a few months after the Parkland, Florida massacre, where 14 students and three employees at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School lost their lives.
This isn't over. We all have to work to find a way to tackle the problem, but given the situation, we have to prepare unfortunately for such events”.
Following the search Friday at both houses and a vehicle that was in use by the suspect, police said they had found numerous explosive devices. Authorities, citing the suspect's diary, say he was planning to kill himself after the attack.
