The US defence contractor has reportedly discussed supplies with officials to Japan's Ministry of Defence. The proposed aircraft reportedly replace F-22 and F-35 and may be superior to both”.
The formal proposal will be made in response to Tokyo's request for information (RFI) as soon as the corporation gets the US government's approval for selling sensitive military technology abroad, sources said.
Japan's major defence contractor “Mitsubishi Heavy Industries” is currently developing experimental aircraft in the country to test advanced fighter aircraft technologies.
If the project succeeds, an F-3 fighter plane that needs to be developed according to sixth generation technology will be able to launch flights in 2017. So far, Mitsubishi has tested a short-lived prototype called X-2.
Despite large investments of about $40 billion, Japanese authorities still seek international co-operation to share costs and get access to necessary technologies.
