Senators on Thursday voted 57 pro and 42 against nomination by US President Donald Trump for the appointment of Mike Pompeii as the new secretary of Americans.
Pompeo, a former army officer who served as Republican Congressman, is seen as a Trump loyal to foreign policy.
He is known as a controversial figure who has been the voice of torturers, the opening of the infamous Guantanamo prison and has a history of xenophobia.
The approval came at a time to lead the US delegation to NATO foreign minister's talks in Brussels this Friday.
