In an interview for the state news agency, RIA, Lavrov has said Russia has refrained in the past from providing rockets for Assad after Western states have called for such a thing.
We had a moral obligation, we promised not to supply Assad with S-300 missiles about 10 years ago”, Lavrov said.
And if they're used only for protection, we've respected the requirements. Now we no longer have that moral obligation”.
The United States, Britain and France have launched more than 100 rockets in Syria's government areas in response to what the West has termed a chemical gun attack in Duma.
Lavrov has said in the interview that Russia has earlier told US officials which parts in Syria are <x0) red minus” for Moscow and that the attacks should not be launched there.
American officials have said they have used Russian communications lines with Russia to clear the air zone from the attacks, but have not informed Moscow of preemptive targets.
Lavrov has said he is convinced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will not allow an armed confrontation between the two states.
