France's President Emmanuel Macron said there should be a reliable offer for the Western Balkans, as, according to him, the risk of increasing foreign powers in the countries of the region exists.
There is a geopolitical danger ahead of us whether the Western Balkans moves towards Turkey or Russia. That's risk”, Macron said.
He spoke before the European Parliament, where he stressed the need for European pragmatism when the Western Balkans are at stake.
He said he advocates a double approach -- the region's approach to Europe, but also its internal reform before membership.
“I don't want the Balkans to turn towards Turkey or Russia, but I don't want Europe to have problems operating with its 28 members, while tomorrow it will be 27. Perhaps in the next few years it will continue with 30, 32 members under the same rules”, Macron said.
This has been his first address to the European Parliament since he took office as president of France.
France is among those EU countries, which do not want to be linked to the timelines in terms of the bloc's enlargement.
