UN prosecutors have called on Appeals judges to condemn former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic on charges of genocide and sentence him to life imprisonment.

Prosecutor Katrina Gustafson, ahead of a five-judge panel of the International Criminal Tribunal for The Hague, has said Karadzic has “abused his power to shed the blood of countless victims” during the war in Bosnia, which followed the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.

Justice requires him to receive the highest possible sentence”, Gustafson said.

In March 2016, Karadzic was convicted of ten counts related to atrocities committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992-95 and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

He has been convicted of genocide, in connection with his role in the Srebrenica Massacre, where about 8 thousand Muslim men and boys were killed. This event has been considered the worst massacre in Europe since World War II.

The war in Bosnia claimed the lives of over 100,000 people, and about 2.2 million others were forced to flee their homes.

In their appeal, prosecutors are also seeking to annul the decision to release Karadzic from the second charge of genocide related to attacks and the goal of destroying the Muslim and Croat population in other parts of Bosnia and to be convicted of this charge, the prosecution follows. REL.

Karadzic, 72, along with his legal team, has also been sent to the Court of Appeals, his 40-year sentence. Karadzic has called for retrial or release from charges.

The decision on the issue is expected to be made by the end of this year.
