A journalist in Nicaragua was killed during a live broadcast of antigovernmental protests. Ángel Gahona was reporting on the damage to a bank in the town of éBlefields) when it was hit by a bullet while broadcasting live on Facebook.
The images show Gahona falling on the ground covered with blood, and people around her cry out in despair for help. Authorities in Nicaragua who are facing many problems as a result of the wave of protests did not comment during the journalist's murder and said they are investigating the event.
Journalist Angel Gahona is not the only victim of violence in Nicaragua, where in recent days more 10 people have been killed in protests, although human rights organisations speak of more than 25 victims. Massive protests are organised against changes to the pension law adopted by President Daniel Ortega's government.
The government's decision increased contributions to workers' pensions and employees, but lowered by 5% their benefits. Angry protesters have burned government buildings in many cities where authorities have deployed the military in an effort to maintain order.
Massive protests are the biggest challenge to Ortega's rule, which began in 2007. After reelection in 2016, Ortega took his wife as deputy Rosario Murrilo, something that contributed nothing to his popularity.
