European Union for Refugees Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said Germany will accept more than 10,000 refugees from northern Africa and the Middle East. He added that the EU Commission has made a pledge from Berlin this week, confirming the German role as a very important player in the EU's restructuring programme.

Germany's “government has once again shown international solidarity,” said Avramoopoulos.

At least 50,000 refugees from the crisis zone will be sent into the European Union by 2019. Other member states are ready to accept about 400,000 refugees.

The European Union will support countries housing refugees with 500m euros, reports “DW” Transmission Periscope.

Since the arrival of immigrants to Europe in 2015, Germany has sheltered over a million people. The figures provided by Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees say migrants coming to this state are mainly with origin from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and Eritrea.

“We must return quickly to normal functioning of the Schengen system. If the Schengen system falls, it will be the end of the EU as we know”, he said, referring to Europe's visa-free travel zone./Periscopi/
