He had gone to the Swiss ski Alps, but since Saturday there is no trace of him.

Haub is the heir to a Tengleman supermarket chain.

German media today report that the desperate search for Tengleman's chief is continuing, but rescue teams fear for the worst, despite hope of a miracle.

In a letter published in the German newspaper Handelsblatt, his brother, Christian Haub, said he was an experienced skier and mountaineer.

He said he still hoped his brother would be found, but the Haub family, one of Germany's richest, was “prepared” for bad news, writes “Bold”.

Adriano Favre, head of mountain rescue services in the Aosta Valley, told the Swiss newspaper “Blic”: “The situation is hopeless, Mr. Haub has abandoned his car at Matterhorn. The area is large, it's an ice zone”.

Has Tengleman's boss been killed?

Already Tuesday, rescue teams have ceased their search (which has been financially supported by the businessman's family) because of poor weather conditions.

Favre said: “The family has secured search teams with unlimited resources, but under these conditions they are useless, the weather is very bad on the Italian side, it snows, the risk of avalanches is huge. We have to stop searching until the weather improves”.
