Expanding NATO and the membership of Balkan countries are undermining security and stability in the region, a Russian lawmaker has said today.
Valentina Matvyenko, speaking today at the Parliament's Supreme Chamber in Bosnia, singled out Montenegro's NATO membership case, but also criticised Macedonia's aspirations to join the military alliance, Reuters agency broadcasts.
Montenegro's “Membership in NATO, against the will of half the citizens of this country, is the most severe violation of the fundamental principles of modern democracy”, Matciyenko, who is chairman of the Russian Parliament's Supreme Chamber, has said.
Macedonia is also trying to make the same dangerous experiment “, it has said, adding that “such a step leads towards destabilising the situation in the region. Mining Europe's system and security”, Matvyenko said, follows REL.
Western governments estimate that NATO and European Union membership are the best way to preserve peace and stability in the Balkans.
