14 people have lost their lives after a military airport in Syria was attacked by rockets. Syrian state media said some missiles hit the Tiyas air base, near the city of Homs, in the early hours of Monday.
Details have not yet been disclosed and no one is reported responsible for this attack, which follows the international alarm on an alleged chemical attack in the town of Douma, controlled by the rebels.
US President Donald Trump named Syrian President Bashar al-Assad an animal, warning that he, along with the Aletats, Iran and Russia, will pay dearly.
Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron issued a joint statement promising a strong and coordinated response to the alleged attack.
But American officials have denied to attack with rockets. “at this moment, the defence department is not conducting air strikes in Syria”, the Pentagon said in a statement.
“Anyway, we continue to closely follow the situation and we support diplomatic efforts to place those who use chemical weapons in Syria and elsewhere, ahead of responsibility”, the statement adds.
Initially, the Syrian state news agency called the missile attack at the Tiyas air base an alleged American attack, but then reference to the United States was removed. In April 2017, the US fired 59 rockets “cruise tomahawk” on the Syrian Shayrat air base, in response to chemical gun attacks in another city controlled by rebels, Khan Sheikh.
Israel has also attacked Syrian targets earlier this year, and the Israeli army has yet to comment on the latest attack. / TCh/
