The plane crashed shortly after it left the military airport .Boufarikuk, west of Algeria, the BBC reports.
An investigation has been launched due to the plane crash, the biggest air disaster ever to occur in Algeria. The government has declared three days of national mourning.
Most of the dead are military personnel and their families, the defence ministry has said. Ten crew members also died.
Among these victims were travelers from the Western Sahara, a territory opposed by Morocco after Spain's withdrawal in 1975.
Front Polysario, who demands independence for territory and is supported by Algeria, says 30 Western Saharas, including women and children, died. A senior member of the Algerian government party FLN said that among the dead are 26 members of Polysario.
