There are only two separate sites for female imprisonment in this country.

The largest detention institution is the Religious Correcting Centre in Freetown, which holds about 90 female prisoners and their children.

Women who are on the death row or those who have life sentences are in this prison, reports “Alzeera”, the Periscope broadcast.

Sierra Leone still holds the death penalty for murder, treason and kidnapping.

However, most female prisoners are arrested for minor acts, such as theft, fraud, disorderly conduct, or debt.

These laws are unclear, badly defined, and disproportionately affect the poor.

Many women spend excessive time in prison waiting for their trial.

“Advoc Ayd” is the only organization that has access to justice, education and empowerment for women and girls who are at odds with the law in Sierra Leone.

Aminata was 17 years old when she was arrested for killing her awesome ex-boy friend eight years ago. Advoc Ayd runs literature classes in the prison with an educational character, Educ Aide, and the support of the Sierra Leone Constitutional Service. One of the women who targeted the class, Serah, said: I choose to learn because in society, if you can reach read or write, you are left out, and I know that once I am relieved I will feel more part of society. I will also be able to help my child to read. When you sit here in the lesson, you can forget what you are in here for, and just sister time to learn. Sierra Leone passed a legal Aid Act in 2012. However, ending for legal power organization remains a challenge.
