Poverty moves some Kenyans to sell their wives for prostitution

It's a clear Sunday morning in KWale, Kenya, where Sande Ramadan woke up to prepare for another job weekend. Dressed in a green vest and brown pants, he cleans his face and continues to the feeling room where his wife Janet Wambu serves breakfast. [...]

Ramadan is a sex worker.
Wambui, his wife works in the same industry. She returned home two nights earlier, after spending 10 days with a German tourist in an expensive house, a few miles from the village of Maween where the couple live.
Ramadan and Wambu have been married for 20 years, reports “Alzeera”, Periscopi broadcast.
But that was not always the case. One day in 2006, Ramadani was tending tourist clothing along Diani Beach in the town of Kwale, 30km southwest of Mambasa, when a German tourist approached him. He wanted a lady to spend some time with him until his vacation ended.
My husband came home that evening and asked if I could act as his sister and accept the offer. After several days of discussion, I agreed,” says Wambui, 38, sitting near Ramadan.
Wambui said her life has changed since she started practicing prostitution. She was a household who depended on the small income provided by her husband.
And that was hard for us. My husband's unpredictable income was not enough, and when he asked me to accept, I had no choice,” she says.
East Africa took over a million tourists in 2016, according to the Kenya Tourism Board.
This number was translated into $100m earned, making Kenya one of the best tourist destinations in Africa./Periscopi/
