Two US senators debated Sunday over President Donald Trump's appointment of CIA Director Mike Pompeo for the post of Secretary of State and CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel for running the intelligence agency.
If confirmed, Mrs. Haspel would be the first female director in the CIA's 70-year history.
Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said on CNN that he predicted both Mr. Pompeii and Mrs. Haspel will be confirmed by the Senate. He did not care to one of the opponents of the candidacy, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky as “an exception” among republican lawmakers.
Senator Paul, also on CNN, argued against Pompeo's candidacy, saying he supports changing the regime with the support of the United States in several foreign countries. Mr. Paul Rand said Mrs. Haspel was linked to the CIA torture of terrorism suspects on secret grounds in foreign countries.
Paul said he would make every effort to bring down the candidacy in the Senate, where the Republicans have a narrow majority, 51-49.
Senator Graham described Mrs. Haspel as the extremely qualified “”, although he acknowledged that she had supported controversial methods of revealing information, including the simulation of drowning, against terror suspects following the 2001 terrorist attacks. The CIA no longer allows these techniques.
Senator Paul said that “America does not support torture. Torture is a symbol of totalitarianism”. / VOA
