US Ambassador Delawi talks about the murder of Oliver Ivanovic

American Ambassador to Kosovo Greg Delawi has commented on the situation in northern Mitrovica, where with particular emphasis he also spoke of the murder of Serbian politician Oliver Ivanovic.

These statements were made for Serbian portal Kossev, following his visit to northern Mitrovica yesterday.

Delawie has said that killing Ivanovic was not necessary because of an interethnic conflict.

I think it's become sometimes clear that Ivanov's terrible murder was not necessarily an interethnic incident. We don't know who did the act, but we certainly need evidence for the case. I think the fact that people are not blaming other communities is very positive. I would interpret this as part of improving reports between Serbs and Albanians”, the American ambassador said, broadcasts news.net.

Delawie stressed that he expects an even greater job from the justice institutions at dawning this case.

He praised co-operation between Kosovo and Serbia.

I'm glad the police are taking this case seriously. There is a Kosovo Serb prosecutor and an Albanian who is leading the investigation, which is good because they are from each community. I think it's a difficult case, where there are different types of evidence that must be appreciated and I hope there will be results. They may need a little bit of time, but we have to support the police and prosecutors to whiteen this case”, Delawi said.

If people have evidence they should tell the police. I know that people think that this case should be solved by now, and in an ideal world it would probably be like this. But in fact complicated cases sometimes take a lot of time to solve”, says the American ambassador.

He also spoke of the situation with the rule of law in northern Mitrovica.

He stressed that this subject is a priority for the American Embassy in Kosovo, says news.net.

The rule of law is probably the number one theme in Kosovo. I talk about this almost every day. There must be a greater rule of law. The German minister Gabriel was here and spoke of the challenges of rule of law. This should be improved through civic pressure”, Greg Delawi said.

In this interview the US ambassador was seen optimistic that the demarcation will be ratified this week.
