By 2017 there were 1,150,000 people born in Albania living in other countries. The data was published by Pew Research Center, which updated the information of 2017 based on United Nations statistics.
According to INSTAT data, there were 2.87 million people in Albania, so Albanians living abroad make up 40% of those inside, according to Monitor estimates. This report is among the highest in the world, according to earlier UN estimates.
According to the Pew Research report, Italy is the first destination Albanian immigrants live in. In total are about 460 thousand Albanians living in Italy.
In second place is Greece, which has once been the main destination of immigrants, but that in recent years many have returned after the crisis of debts that invaded the Greek state.
In third place are the United States, a highly preferred destination, where many Albanians in years have fled through lottery (the number of applications is up to 200,000 per year) or in other forms. In the United States, 90 thousand citizens are born in Albania.

In recent years the migration cycle has revived, while the number of those returning has been reduced, causing net migration to deteriorate. According to INSTAT data, in the last seven years (2011-2017), about 330 thousand people, such as immigrants, have left Albania in total.
Since 2011 it has been noted that there has been an increase of Albanians abandoning the country. In that year, which coincides with visa removal, the highest number of fugitives was registered, with about 52 thousand. After gradually reduced in years, a new wave of migration was again recorded in 2017, to about 400,000 people who fled.
While there are many returning, the number of those leaving remains ever higher, and the difference is negative. In 2017, in a negative development, after net migration has deteriorated.
INSTATS records show that in 2017, the number of immigrants is 39,905 and the number of immigrants - 25.003 persons. Net migration (the difference between immigrants and immigrants) results -14,902 persons. A year ago, the difference was much lower, less than 10,000 people. This shows that more is leaving and fewer are coming back.
