Over 500 civilians have been killed during the week-long intense shelling of Syrian forces in an area controlled by rebels near Damascus. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 121 children are included among the victims in eastern Gotham.
Since last Sunday, troops of Bashar Al Assad's regime, backed by Russian forces, have been sharply targeting the area, where some 393 thousand civilians are trapped. Barrel bombs are also being dropped on them. The Syrian Observatory claims 29 victims were marked on Saturday, including 17 in the main city of Douma. According to activists, many hospitals are out of place.
The Syrian government denies targeting civilians, insisting it is trying to free eastern Gout from terrorists. The plight of civilians in the area has alarmed world leaders. Conditions there have been described as ground heaven by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
The UN Security Council is trying to adopt a resolution that would enable the nationwide ceasefire to guarantee passage of aid and medical evacuations. The vote has been postponed several times since Thursday, as Russia refuses to support the draft resolution in the current situation.
Moscow requires that the ceasefire not include opposition groups, which according to it are co-operating with the terrorists of al-Qaeda and Al Nusras.
