The Munich Security Report warns: The World on the Front of a Conflict

With the US's international role reduced, Europe must define its future, a predictive report says. That assessment defines the agenda for leaders on the eve of Germany's first security conference. The report was released Thursday, titled “Anash é back?” predicts a new era of uncertainty in [...]
The report was released Thursday, titled “Anash é or Back?” envisions a new era of uncertainty on the horizon.
“In the last year, the world offered much to bring about a significant conflict,” writes the Chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Wolfgang Ischinger, who had served as ambassador to the United States and Great Britain.
Ischinger increasingly noted strained relations between the US and North Korea, growing rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and continuing tensions between Russia and NATO in Europe, reports “DW” Transmission Periscope.
The latest MSC report followed last year's forecast that the United States under President Donald Trump could lose its defined role as guarantor of international security by acting unilaterally and advancing a United States-based vision with losses passing on to its traditional allies.
Under Trump, the US has given up policies based on common values, showing little interest in developing regional or global institutions that form international relations and in the country favours bilateral ties that serve its own interests, according to the report's assessment.
This stance goes hand in hand with the White House's lack of interest in advancing diplomacy.
The budget at the US State Department has been cut mercilessly since Trump entered office, while defence spending has increased significantly.
The most powerful state in the world has begun to sabotage the order it created,” said the report, quoting John Ikenberry, a US foreign policy expert at Princeton University./Periscopi/
