He was the only candidate proposed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). So President Sejdiu would continue the mandate of former leader Ibrahim Rugova until the upcoming parliamentary elections.
110 deputies were present at the Parliament's solemn session for the election of the president then.
But Sejdiu could not complete his five-year mandate, as is seen by the Kosovo Constitution.
On September 27th 2010, he resigned from the post of president after a Constitutional Court ruling found Sejdiu to have committed serious violations of the Constitution with the hold of the post of president and that of LDK chairman, though with frozen functions.
Sejdiu made his decision to resign public during a media conference, where he said the president's post had exercised with responsibility and full dedication.
Dear Kosovo Republic citizens. Today I have resigned from the position of president of the Republic of Kosovo. Since February 10th 2006, as president of the Republic of Kosovo and of all its citizens, I have exercised this position with responsibility, full devotion and a clean conscience, always having the interest of our beloved citizens and our beloved country as a fundamental guide. I, for the rest of my life, have respected institutions that come out of the free vote of citizens. I have worked to realize the political will of the people of Kosovo for freedom and independence and have led the process of independence of our country” with full responsibility, Sejdiu had said then.
He said the decision on resignation had been made precisely to respect the Constitutional Court as the highest insistence on interpretation of the Constitution of Kosovo.
Fatmir Sejdiu was born on October 23rd 1951 in the village of Paskasica in Besiana, while living in Pristina. It has to carry out the Jurydical Faculty at the University of Pristina and has won the Doctor of Juridical Sciences degree at the same university.
