New Zealand leads the index in the least corrupt country, while Nordic nations such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden make up the top list of the world's least corrupt countries.
And it does not seem that the situation will improve as soon as possible. Most countries are moving slowly in their efforts to prevent corruption.
In the last six years, very little progress has been made in this regard. Some countries have noted progress in reducing corruption, including Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, and the Great Kingdom, while other countries have experienced dramatic declines, such as Syria, Yemen, and Australia.
Surprisingly, countries with lower press protection and NGOs (nongovernmental organisations) also tend to have the worst rates of corruption. Almost all journalists killed since 2012, were killed in corrupt countries.
The CPI, one of the best-known corruption measures, receives data from a host of institutions, but primarily takes into consideration business people's surveys from around the world.
