US Army commanders, who are planning to evacuate troops from Syria, have recommended that weapons remain to Kurdish fighters in the fight against Islamic State, which would anger NATO ally Turkey.
The three officials, under anonymity, said the recommendations are part of a draft plan by the American military. It's still unclear whether the Pentagon will take the case to the White House, a decision to be made by President Donald Trump.
“Planification is continuing and is focused on controlling troop withdrawals, ensuring that all measures have been taken for the safety of our troops”, Commander Sean Robertson said.
President Trump had ordered the withdrawal of American troops from Syria last week, which sparked criticism and the resignation of Defence Secretary Jim Mattis.
While American officials consider this action to be “opposition to Kurdish troops in fighting Islamic State”, Turkey has warned offensively, increasing fears of violence against hundreds of thousands of civilians
