Thaci at the UN: To win together the battle for our future - the battle for peace!

At the UN Security Council, Thaci has said that two decades ago, on a typical day like this, he has been in uniform, fighting against Slobodan Milosevic's regime.

I am very proud of my past and my fellow fighters. Today as president of the independent state of Kosovo, I am aware that I have another major challenge ahead. Battle for our future. Battle for peace. The battle to end a century-old conflict between our two peoples. I know it won't be easy at all. I know that the terms of this nature are not very popular. But they are necessary. I deeply believe that such an agreement would have transforming powers in our region. Such an agreement would change priorities. No one could ever win a vote anymore by promoting hatred. No one could materialize fear.
A comprehensive agreement would open the door to a new leadership that would have reforms and development”, Thaci said.

Kosovo's president has said he believes fully in a future where Kosovo and Serbia sit as equal at the European family table.

I believe in a future where Kosovo soldiers and those of Serbia serve side by side on peacekeeping missions around the world. I believe in such a future, because I've experienced the impossible, the incredible, that happened before my eyes. I am inspired every day by Kosovo athletes who teach us that return is possible even after failure, that our flag can be raised even in countries that have not yet recognised our country. I am inspired by journalists who criticize me every day and make me the best president of my country. I am inspired by Kosovo citizens who, despite the pain they have suffered, collapses and losses, have never renounced values and principles and still insist on freedom, equality, justice and dignity”, he has said.

Thaci has confirmed that he believes in a European future for Kosovo and our region.

A future without intrigues, conflicts and hatred. It remains in our power to live this future. Soon, in the weeks and months to come. With a final peace agreement Kosovo-Serbia, legally binding, without borders on ethnic grounds, without exchange of populations, but, with mutual recognition as independent and sovereign countries and states with multiethnic society”, he has said.
