Russia's President Vladimir Putin said the danger of a nuclear war should not be underestimated and criticised the United States for abandoning weapons deals.
Speaking at the annual media conference in Moscow, Putin said he hopes the common language will prevail at the time of increased tensions between Russia and the West.
Putin said nuclear war could lead to “the death of civilisation”.
This is at least the second time in several months Putin publicly raises the possibility of such a catastrophe.
Putin said the US withdrawal from the Anti-Balistic Missile Treaty in 2002 has undermined “strategic balance” between Moscow and Washington.
He said the US plan for withdrawing from the Middle-Red Nuclear Forces Treaty is “another step” in this direction.
Putin also said it is bad that the United States and Russia do not talk about the New Start, a long-range nuclear weapons treaty that expires in 2021, but that can last for five years if the two countries agree.
