France is again facing new protests today. The government has hired about 900,000 police and other security officials to control the protest actions. About 8 thousand police officers and 12 armoured police vehicles are located only in Paris, while so far about a thousand protesters in the city's centre have gathered.
At least 34 people have been arrested in Paris, reportedly though there have not been acts of violence by protesters. The series of protests began three weeks ago to counter the oil tax. Last week, hundreds were arrested and many others were injured in the violent Paris protest, one of the worst uprisings in recent decades.
Today, the streets of Paris seem calmer than on past Saturdays. Only about a thousand people have gathered in the center of Paris. There have been clashes with police, but tear gas has not yet been used and violence has not been triggered by either side.
It is reported that most protesters are men aged 20 to 40, because women and elderly people are fearing possible outbreaks of violence. The Interior Ministry has declared it is expected that some 10,000 people nationwide will participate in today's protests, writes “BBC”
