After 18 years at the top of the CDU, Angela Merkel withdraws! Finance politician Friedrich Merz; CDU Secretary General Annegret Kramp-Carrenbauer; and Health Minister Jens Spahn are in the race to replace her in the post of CDU chairman.
The three have completed the campaign throughout the country, and have been presented at regional CDU conferences with the main topics selected by them; immigration and the European Union. Delegates vote today at the Hamburg CDU Congress for the new chairman.
Friedrich Merz is celebrating a return to politics anyway. Until 2002, he led the Christian Democrat parliamentary group in Bundestag, while Merkel claimed the post for himself.
Disillusioned, he left politics and continued his career in the finance economy. Now, he's positioned as the firmline representative.
Jens Spahn is the youngest candidate, considered quite different among the other candidates. In the polls it ranks very low. The minister of Health is considered an opponent of Merkel's refugee policy and supporter of classical conservative themes.
