The Japanese government has announced that its defence budget will increase to a record $47 billion for next year's fiscal year, as Tokyo will strengthen missile defence and put hidden aircraft in an effort to fight China.
According to foreign media, Telegrafi notes, defence spending was part of a national budget of $912 billion for fiscal year starting on April 1st 2019, approved by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet.
Thus, the government decided to set aside 5.26 trillion yen (47 billion dollars) for defence, the fifth record year, defence ministry officials said on Friday. The budgetary demand requires approval by parliament, which has the majority.
Among other things, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's conservative government is reportedly planning to modify a ship that transports helicopters to make it suitable for fighter aircraft.
According to the media, Japan has increased defence spending, as it aims to cope with China's growing military power and threats from North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
