The exact number of identified tunnels is unknown, but the operation has been undertaken on the Israeli side of the border. Tensions remain high between Israel and Hezbollah, who fought in a month-long battle in 2006. Over 1,125 Lebanese, most of them civilians and about 40 Israelites were killed in that conflict. The conflict began when Hezbollah militants launched an operation in Israel during which they killed eight soldiers and kidnapped two others.
Israel has warned another war with the militant group and threatened the massive use of military force.
Hezbollah, which has one of the most powerful militant forces in the region, has threatened to attack Israel with rockets.
Iran-backed Shia group has not yet commented on Israel's actions.
