Congress reports on Russian election intervention signal an expansion of social media bombed with false information and targeted propaganda

Renee Di Resta, head of one of two cyber security organisations accused by the US Senate. A. that analyzes Russian information manipulations that circulates in Net makes it even more difficult: he talks about the war of information and, at an editorial in the New York Times, he says he has begun a race of weapons that cannot be won, as arsenals are constantly developing.

But it can be achieved to minimize the damage if policies, digital companies and users understand the importance of what is happening, risks to democracy and actually agree to co-operate. But it can be achieved to minimize damage if policies, digital companies and users understand the importance of what is happening, risks to democracy and agree to co-operate.

The two reports commissioned by a body of the Republican-led Congress (The Intelligence Commission led by Senator Richard Burr) and published Monday by New Knowledge Company, the Diista company that worked with Columbia University researchers and one of Oxford University analysts along with another specialised company, Grafika ʹ goes well beyond the official confirmation of the Kremlin's intervention in the 2016 elections: a fact that is denied (or, ridicule) by Donald Trump.

The documents correspond to the description of an even more alarming picture, such as what happened during the presidential campaign, such as the massive deinformation work that continued even later, in 2017 and beyond, by attacking American investigators (especially super prosecutor Mueller and former FBI head Comey) and extending the audience of companies bombed with false information and messages targeting propaganda.

So far attention was focused on the manipulation of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The poll submitted to Congress found that “falsifications” of the Internet Research Agency (IRA), the organisation of St Petersburg officially private but managed by an entrepreneur very close to Putin, have also used all other digital platforms, from Snapchat to Tumblr, from the Pinterest in Reddi, to spread false news and food.

Even smaller social media: they have more limited audiences, but they are more vulnerable, without effective security controls. Russian tycoons have also used payment platforms like PayPal to organise marches and protests. The Institute, which so far has not been considered, appears as a tool in which the IRA has effectively drawn its devastating messages, especially since Facebook and Twitter have increased surveillance on their networks.

Russian cyber fighters were not limited to favouring Trump with messages of support to his eligible voters or by denigring Hillary Clinton. They also tried to keep the niggers mostly Democrats away from texting polls aimed at displeasing and giving them the wrong information on how to vote. The thing is politically important because, as noted by Naacp, the main civil rights league for black people (which also promoted a week of Facebook boycott) in 2016, the number of African-American voters fell for the first time in 40 years. The fault of these hidden maneuvers or of Hillary's lack of appeal? Of course, Clinton would be the president today if in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin hadn't been kept in the Obama era.

However, The IRA has continued to fuel the racial dispute even after the presidential elections and is now aiming at hispanics, seeking to increase disputes over illegal immigrants.

Understandably, the delay is what was happening and after minimizing the crisis, Facebook, Google and Twitter had promised to compete for cover. In part they did, but the gaps on one side have been reopened elsewhere.

And companies accused by Congress of monitoring the situation accuse the secret technology giants: they offered analysts partial, often unintelligible, as they were out of context. And, in any case, large data has come only from the US, while for the Times there are traces of serious interventions in Italy, Great Britain and Brazil, and analysts are sure of Russian attacks during various referenda, from Spain to Macedonia. /Albanian
