Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj in an interview with the Associated Press has talked about Kosovo's history 20 years ago and now on its way towards forming the military.
Here is part of Haradinaj's statement to the AP:
In the years of '98 and '99 our people have faced the greatest threat ever. Half of our population moved and living in our country was impossible. Only thanks to NATO's intervention, thanks to international aid, have we managed to end a terrible freedom struggle led by the KLA and the people of Kosovo, and stopped by NATO, which resulted in the withdrawal of Serb forces. The Milosevic Serb forces of the time had also lost control in Kosovo, following previous wars in Croatia and Bosnia. It was a major achievement of the international community that ended the war. After the war, there was no longer any need for our liberation army. He needed reconstruction and restoration. The KLA was then transformed into an emergency force, which helped rebuild homes, roads and schools, as well as assisting KFOR in various tasks when required. Today, 20 years later, after being helped from around the world and after maintaining peace and security for the people of Kosovo, we are creating our army, so far appointed as KSF, in order to contribute to the peace and stability of our state, the region, in hopes of contributing to peace and stability worldwide. So far, we've only been consumers of peace and we have international troops here and yes, we would like one day to repay all nations, all the women and men who have served in our country, to serve their side for peace in the world.
Kosovo has done a serious job of completing the entire security structure, all institutions. Our police are doing a great job, Intelligence Agency in partnership with sister organizations is doing a great job fighting terrorism, fighting foreign fighters and fighting extremism. Our judiciary is continuing to improve noticeably. So far we haven't been in a position to have our army, but you can't be sure, you can't contribute to world peace and stability without peace for yourself without having our army. We have decided at this stage, so that we, like Kosovo, can have our army, so that we can make our contribution modest to our peace and stability, the region, and also to preserve the stability and peace in the world.
Not only I, who was a wartime commander in the '98s and '99s, but I believe that all of Kosovo's people feel relieved because they don't finally need to think about how to defend themselves. That's a question that's been answered forever. And given our intention to be part of NATO, this is remarkable.
