German President: Our democracy is powerful, but we must respect others

Political and social disputes in Germany have become very intense during 2018. Very often, social divisions and the departure of politicians from citizens are spoken of. Especially in the time of social networks have these differences and disputes increased, resentment and anger have increased. This is not often about exchange of thoughts or debates.

Germany's president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has featured in the traditional Christmas speech, these very differences: “here we have poisonings, voices rise and anger.” He has the impression that the <x2-Germans are talking less and less to each other”, though disputes and differences have increased. Our democracy is powerful! ”, the president stressed. Steinmeier has gained this impression during meetings and conversations with millions of people. “Everyone should be engaged in associations, politics, hospitals, police, firemen or even in meetings with neighbours.” Christmas is also a good time for meetings and negotiations, exchange of thoughts.

Steinmeier warns that “democracy is powerful, but only as much as we make it powerful”. We, he said, must defend our opinion, but we must also respect the opinions of others. “Finally we have to find a compromise, and compromise is not weakness! The ability to compromise is the power of democracy. ”

This is Frank Walter Steinmeier's second speech as president. Unlike last year, he has mentioned other lands this time. Steinemeier cited France and barricades there, major US differences, concerns about the path of the Great Birtania after Brexit, disturbing developments in Europe, Hungary, Italy and other countries. “Germans are certainly not spared these developments”, he says.
