The Bulgarian government has asked the European Union for an additional fund of 80m euros in order to strengthen alertness to the influx of migrants.
In recent years, the union has reportedly financed the consolidation of border controls in Bulgaria by about 150m euros.
According to Ivo Cekov, professor of Balkan international relations at Sofia University, the influx of refugees to Bulgaria is an issue that concerns Bulgaria and the EU.
Cekov: “In recent years there has been a great influx of people from the Middle East, mainly from Syria, but also from Central Asia or North Africa. This has become a problem for Bulgaria, and now it is time to establish certain specific protocols on who should enter Bulgaria and beyond into the European Union. Migration problem extends wider than Bulgaria, jeopardising European Union's external borders.”
The immigration issue was also the focus of a meeting Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov held this weekend with his Greek counterpart, Alexis Cipras.
The two top officials said they are waiting for Romania to assume the European Union's rotating presidency in order to propose concrete solutions to the immigration problem, as they cannot bear the burden of solidarity against refugees.
