A Russian court has arrested and sentenced the well-known human rights activist, 77-year-old Lev Poomarev, to 25 days in prison after appealing to participate in an unauthorised manifestation.
The Council of Europe, through Dunja Mijatovic, the commissioner for Human Rights, requested his immediate release.
I'm shocked by the arrest. Poomarev was convicted of violations of the law because of a Facebook post for an unauthorised rally, held on October 28th in Moscow, she stressed.
To punish someone for sharing information in social media for a public event of a peaceful nature is not justified”, she added, recalling that her office repeatedly urged Russia to change the laws regulating demonstrations.
