Voters in the United States today choose governors, representatives, and senators. They will cast their vote for all 435 members of the House of Representatives, for 35 out of 100 Senate seats and for dozens of governors.

Republicans currently dominate both Congress chambers and the White House. Political observers on both sides of the spectrum are urging people to come out and vote because, as they say, these may be the most important elections in their lives, if not in American history.

US President Donald Trump is not on the ballot, but the elections are expected to form the rest of his presidency. He has acknowledged that the process is a referendum for him, writes the REL.

I'm not on ballot papers, but I'm on ballot papers, because elections are also a referendum for me”, Trump said.

If the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives or Senate from the Republicans, they can clearly limit what President Trump can do in the last two years of his mandate.

Thomas Greven, by John F. The Berlin-based Kennedy explains more about Radio Free Europe:

“is the first chance since Donald Trump has been elected president to become some measurements of his policies. As you know, the Constitution of the United States has a separate power system, where the president is elected independently by Congress, and these elections give American citizens the chance to limit a president who has shown undemocratic, unliberal and authoritarian tendencies. If the Democrats win the majority in one or both chambers of Congress, this puts some restrictions on what the president can do. It's a truly crucial moment in American political history”.

Radio Free Europe: Is there any chance that these choices will change the course of events?

Thomas Greven: “Absolutely. At least, in terms of the legislative agenda of President Trump and the Republican Party. As you know, Trump has styled himself as a sort of populist, working for the interests of ordinary people, but, in the end, he has done nothing but advance the traditional agenda of Republicans in favor of the rich and powerful”.

The “Democrats are in a relatively good position to win one of the rooms. I'm absolutely sure they'll have growth, but it's important that they win the majority in one of the rooms. The chances are good for the House of Representatives, and in the Senate, they don't seem to stand well because many Democrats try to protect their seats. But if they win the majority in the House of Representatives, this would undoubtedly change the course of events in terms of legislative agenda”.

“Trump will still continue to use its executive powers. He has warned late on changing the right to citizenship simply by executive order. Here he can also rely on the Supreme Court. But as for legislative agenda, elections can really change the path of developments if the Democrats manage to win a majority in one of the two <x1) rooms.

In September, the American Centre for Research has published a report that has revealed that American voters' enthusiasm for the Congress elections is at the highest level in more than two decades.

About 61 percent of voters surveyed have said they are enthusiastic about the November elections; 72 percent have said the question of which party controls Congress will be a factor in their vote, while 60 percent have said they view their vote as expression of support or opposition to President Trump.

Yes, what is the focus of the campaign? Among the main issues is migration, about which both parties try to gain supremacy. The Democrats believe the president's harsh rhetoric about this subject will help them attract voters, especially young people and minorities.

“Democrats will destroy health care by offering free care to illegal immigrants, but even more than that”, Trump said.

Republicans estimate that the president's harsh stand will benefit from conservatives, who feel that the Democrats care more about illegal migrants than American citizens.

A Gallup centre survey, meanwhile, has found that healthcare is the main concern for American voters even before crime and violence.

Many analysts say voters tend to punish the ruling party for increasing the cost of health insurance.

According to the firm for political advertising Kantar Media / CMAG, the Democrats have spent $125m on health care ads, while the Republicans spent about $50m.

But the issue Trump mentions at almost every campaign rally is the economy of the United States. It constantly cites levels of economic growth and unemployment rates. In September, unemployment rates have dropped to 3.7 percent in the U.S.

“Democrats produce crowds. In the Republicans we make jobs”, Trump said.

But the convention elections tend to be bad news for the party that controls the White House. According to estimates, from 21 sets of elections held since 1934, the president's party has scored victory in the House of Representatives only three times, and in the Senate five times.

A day after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20, 2017, millions of people, mostly women, have staged a massive protest in Washington and other US cities against Trump.

The assessment of the president is also seen as an indication of how his party will emerge. President Trump currently enjoys about 40% support. By comparison, former President Barack Obama enjoyed about 45% support before the Congress elections in 2010, when the Democrats suffered some of the biggest electoral losses in the history of the United States.

History has shown cases like that of 1994, when the Republican Party has gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, causing six years of battles with then Democrat President Bill Clinton.

The Democrats have restored both rooms in 2006, helping President Barack Obama realise part of his agenda after taking office two years later.

But what do the November 6th elections mean for the upcoming US presidential elections, to be held in 2020? Analyst Greven, by John F. Kennedy, give this answer to Radio Free Europe:

It's hard to say. They may be the beginning of a star's appearance, either on the democratic side or in the Republicans or both. Who knows who will be the most prominent winner and exploit these elections as a platform to make the challenges in the upcoming presidential election? This is completely unknown”.
