One of President Donald Trump's former foreign policy campaign advisers has ordered Monday to begin serving a 14-day prison sentence.
George Papadopoulos was sentenced for lying to investigators for his role in Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential elections in the United States.
Mr. Papadopoulos tried to postpone his brief sentence while awaiting a court ruling he had appealed. The decision involved a particular case, regarding the constitutionalisation of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's appointment, whose investigation into possible links to Mr. Trump's aides with Russia was applied to Mr. Papadopoulos.
On Sunday, Judge Judge Randolph Moss rejected Mr. Papadopoulos' request to delay his prison sentence, arguing that when he had admitted to lying to investigators, he automatically relinquished the right to appeal the agreement with the prosecutor to plead guilty. Part of the sentence handed down by the Moss Court, is the fine of $9,000 and $500 and the carrying out of 200 hours of community labor by Mr. Papadopoulos.
Judge Moss also said that two other judges had approved the constitutionality of Mr. Mueller's appointment and added that there remains an extremely small possibility for this issue to be concluded with an opposite conclusion.
31-year-old Papadopoulos is a relatively insignificant figure in Mr. Mueller's 18-month investigation. He pleaded guilty to having lied to investigators in January 2017 about the number of his contacts with people related to Russia and the time they occurred. / VoA
