In an exclusive research presented by The Guardian shows how populists have tripled their votes over the past two decades, Periscope follows.
The populist parties have arrived more than triple their support in Europe in the last 20 years, providing enough votes to put their leaders in government positions in 11 countries and aiming to establish a new political order across the continent.
The data shows that populism has been steadily on the rise since 1998. Two decades ago, populist parties were a marginal force that received only 7 per cent of the votes in Europe; in the recent national elections, one in four voters gave the vote for populist parties.
In 1998, populists had only 12 million and 500 thousand people living under cabinet populist governments. In 2018 the number is 170 million and 244. /Periscopi
