The United States and the European Union say today's elections held in separatist-controlled areas in the Donnetsk and Luhansk regions will further undermine efforts to end the conflict that has killed more than 10,300 people since April 2014. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the elections “provide yet another example of Russian subversive activity”.
Moscow denies that the elections represent violations of Minsk's agreements, aimed at ending violence.
The head of the Donetsk region, Denis Pushili, 37, is expected to win in the elections there. Meanwhile, in Luhansk, the current head of this region, Leonid Pasechnik, is also expected to win
Both of them, like Pushil and Pasechnik, have promised to seek closer ties with Moscow.
