The Russian government has sent a message of pessimism regarding relations with the United States after the Democrats took over the House of Representatives in Tuesday's elections. These results give the Democratic Party majority in the House of Representatives, a change that is expected to undermine Donald Trump's legislative agenda.
“It is fair to have sufficient confidence that the prospect of normalising relations between Russia and the US does not seem very hopeful on the horizon”, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday, when asked to comment on the Democrats' victory in the House of Representatives.
However, he added, Russia remains open to dialogue.
We have many problems ahead of us that require our communication. These are strategic security and gun control problems and will not disappear automatically, without our” talks, he said at a conference before journalists.
Russia had declared that relations with the US are at the lowest level ever in recent months when Obama was in power, in the period when accusations of Russian intervention in the US elections took place.
After Trump came to power, Russia has stated several times that it aims to restore ties with the US. On the other hand, during a summit in Helsinki last summer, Trump had refused to support the assessment of intelligent services that Russia had intervened in the elections.
The leaders of the two states are expected to meet twice this month. First, they will meet in Paris this weekend to mark the end of World War I, while later they will meet at the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Relations between the two countries have not been at a satisfactory level in recent years and no significant improvement is expected even in the coming months, given the fact that the US has warned new sanctions against Russia, writes “CNN”
