On Saturday, Juncker hosted a working dinner with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Ctete, who after the meeting said he hoped to avoid EU sanctions.
At the beginning of the week, the Commission offered legal measures against Italy, up to heavy fines, as Rome plans to increase its deficit to 2019 by failing to comply with the eurozone budgetary discipline rules.
Juncker said dinner with Cute was vivid and interesting. We agreed to continue dialogue and reduce the opposite positions.
Other EU member states must approve the Commission's proposal to punish Italy, which could happen in the coming months.
The Italian populist government set for next year a deficit target of 2.4% of the gross domestic product (PBB), or three times higher than what was defined by the previous government, Pash submits.
The ruling populist parties in Rome stressed the fact that it is necessary to bypass the EU's fiscal rules to fight economic stagnation and to uphold the election campaign promises.
