The leaders of France and Germany unanimously appealed against isolationism and a world of community and pro-globalism.
The future of peace is in the hands of the nations of the world, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday evening in the welcoming speech at the opening of the Paris Peace Forum, where it simultaneously stood up for the multilateral system of global governance.
“History will no doubt remember the photograph of 84 heads of state and governments united peacefully under the Arch of Triumph. But what remains uncertain is how you know this picture will be interpreted in the future. Will it be an enlightening symbol of lasting peace among nations or the moment of union before the world goes into turmoil,” Macron said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also spoke at the opening ceremony. Merkel warned that peace should not be taken well in today's world.
If isolation wasn't the right solution 100 years ago, how can it be today when the world and people are five times more interconnected? Merkel said.
The Paris Peace Forum opened after the ceremony was held with over 80 world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It will take place by Tuesday.
