About 150 whales have been found dead on the beach in New Zealand. The news has been made known by local authorities, who were informed of the tragedy by a tourist visiting Stewart Island.
When the authorities arrived on the island, half of the whales had died while others were still alive, but there was no chance of escape.
It's sad, but the chances of getting back to the sea were zero, we decided to proceed with euthanasia, so we wouldn't let them suffer. This decision broke our hearts, but we had no other choice” stated Ren Leppens, responsible for the animal conservation operations on Stewart Island.
This is not the first time that dead whales are found on the shores of New Zealand, since even in the past, animalists have sounded the alarm for the high mortality rate of mammals.
The causes of whale death are still unknown.
Dead whales belong to the so-called pilot whale group, living in large groups, following each other.
