A bridge linking Hong Kong and Macau to the Chinese town of Zhuhai will finally open this week.
This also marks the conclusion of the longest bridge ever built for sea passage, nine years after construction began.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend a ceremony in Zhuhai on Tuesday, along with senior officials from Hong Kong and Macau. Division, the bridge will open for public traffic Wednesday.
Bridge 55 miles (34 km) was originally thought to open in 2016, but repeated delays postponed it this year.
This is a key element of China's plan for an area of the Great Gulf that covers 56,500 square miles [56,500 sq km] throughout southern China and includes 11 cities, including Hong Kong and Macaun, the home of a combined population of 68 million.
Supporters of the idea say the bridge will cut travel time between cities from three hours to 30 minutes, which will enable travelers and tourists to move easily to the region.
