Pakistani authorities announced through a communique that Sharif was arrested on October 5th on corruption charges.
He is accused of misusing his authority as Minister of the Punjab Provinca from 2013 to 2018 to influence authorities to provide contracts for a government housing programme for low-income citizens to a political company.
Sharif's lawyer, Azam Naziri Tarar, said today that the court has ordered his client to remain in prison for 10 days, in order to be questioned by authorities.
Sharif's party has said his arrest is politically motivated and aims to weaken the party, ahead of elections to be held on October 14th.
Shahbaz Sharif is the younger brother of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has been expelled from the political scene after the Supreme Court last year charged him with charges related to corrupt cases.
