German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that the great loss of her conservative allies in the Bravaria region shows voters have lost confidence in the government and promised to fight to regain it.
My learning from this is that I, as Chancellor, should ensure a restoration of confidence. I will work on it with all the energy I have”, Merkel said at an event of German industry representatives.
Comments come after Merkel's sister-in-law party suffered major losses Sunday in Bravaria's state elections, causing uncertainty in the ruling coalition.
With nearly all votes counted, the Christian Social Union lost its absolute majority in the Bravaria Parliament, which it has had since 1957.
The Greens rose in second place, while the anti-migrant Anti-Alventive Party for Germany will be introduced for the first time to the Bavarez Parliament.
According to analysts, German society has been deeply divided since 2015, when Merkel has opened Germany's doors to over a million migrants, mainly Muslims from the Middle East.
