European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned on Friday of a new war in the Balkans if Bosnia, Albania, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo do not feel the EU is serious to offer them membership in the future.
If in Europe's very complicated landscape, the impression is that we are not serious in providing the prospect for EU membership in the Western Balkans, then we can see later and perhaps even faster what we saw in the Balkans in the 1990s, “said Juncker in a speech to the Austrian parliament broadcast international media.
The six Balkan states, which during the 1990s formed the battlefield in Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II that led to the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, are currently in different phases of accession talks with the EU.
