Germany will continue for six months on temporary raids on the border with Austria, due to concerns that EU foreign borders are not sufficiently protected, the German Interior Ministry said.
Germany co-ordinated that decision with Austria, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, a ministry spokeswoman said.
The Danish government issued a similar announcement Friday, citing the threat from terrorism.
Germany and other countries that are part of the EU's free movement area, known as Schengen, have established emergency border controls in 2015, as over a million refugees and migrants -- mainly from the Middle East -- have entered Europe.
We aim to return the passport-free travel within the EU, but the conditions for this do not exist. Many migrants continue to enter our country illegally”, Germany's Interior Ministry spokeswoman said.
Opinion in Germany is deeply divided on the issue of migrants.
